Veneto

Most Italian cities are a buzz of bicycles any time of the day, but particularly of the evening. Friends going out for a drink, people coming home from work and heading to an osteria, criss crossing the cobbled streets. If you are an 80s tragic you'll see many bikes you'd swoon over converted to town bikes and used to get to the shops and back.

The post fairy

It may have been wishful thinking, but maybe a little like you I was hoping to refresh the blog and find something new had been added - without me having to compose it.

No such luck.

I'm going to write this in one unedited take.

Same problem. Different country.

The same issue which tore at the fabric of Paris-Roubaix is happening in our own backyard.

Moreland council plans to replace the charming cobbled pavé alleys with fresh bitumen, forever changing the aesthetic of the area.

The essence of Paris-Roubaix remaining Queen of the Classics was to preserve the back country cobbled roads to ensure it didn't become a pawn in the cycling calendar.

Looks like Melburn-Roobaix will eventually suffer a similiar fate - unless the council is given good reason to preserve this cultural identity. As it turns out, one of the planned sectors for 2012's route is the first to undergo Morelands's permenant cultural plastic surgery.

One bike to rule them all

There is no doubt the popularity of cyclocross in this hemisphere is on the up and up.

Even if you never pin on a number, a cross bike is arguably one of the more utilitarian bikes you could get for recreational riding, racing, commuting, touring and if you've got the skills, mountain biking.

I got my hands on a Trek Presidio to thrash. Here's my 20c for whatever it is worth.

Riding partners

The FYXO 'People's Choice'.

Last year I invited Eddy Merckx and he politely declined. He's already made the trip to Australia this year so as much as I'd love to see the Cannibal pound the pave the likely hood is low. Not even an offering of frites and mayo will get him over the line.

However, there is sure to be a string of high profile ex-cyclists, has beens, could have beens, B-list celebrities, and otherwise cool cats that you'd love to roll alongside this year.
